A few things worth planning for.

Can I stay home during a renovation?

Ask which rooms and utilities will be unavailable, how the work area will be separated, and whether you will have a safe route through the property. A kitchen project may need a temporary meal-preparation area; a bathroom project needs a plan for access to another bathroom. Decide on occupancy after the scope is reviewed.

What should I prepare for a consultation?

Bring room dimensions if available, photos, a list of what is not working, and a few examples of finishes you like. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves and note any deadline. Avoid ordering materials until dimensions and the installation plan are confirmed.

What about building access and approvals?

For a condo, co-op, rental or managed building, ask management for its renovation requirements, approved working hours, delivery access and any documents it needs. Discuss responsibility for approvals and permits before agreeing on a start date.
